K1 - K5 Art Lessons
Lesson Descriptions

Holiday Oil Pastel Lesson
Students will learn to create a festive holiday scene using oil pastels. They will practice blending warm and cool colors to create a glowing background effect, and use layering techniques to add details such as ornaments, a star, and a decorated tree.
Insect Symmetry Lesson
Students will learn to draw and paint a symmetrical insect, such as a butterfly, using paint. They will explore the concept of symmetry by creating matching wings on both sides, and practice blending warm and cool colors to fill their design with bold, expressive color.

Acrylic Flower Lesson
Students will learn to paint flowers using acrylic paint, focusing on petal shape, composition, and color mixing. They will practice painting stems and leaves while exploring how to create contrast between the flowers and a bold, solid-color background
Matisse Interdisciplinary History Collage Lesson
Students will learn about the life and work of artist Henri Matisse and create a collage inspired by his famous cut-out style. They will practice cutting and arranging bold, colorful paper shapes — including organic forms, flowers, and geometric shapes — to build a vibrant composition on a dark background

Space Exploration Art Lesson
Students will learn to draw and color a planet using colored pencils on dark paper. They will practice layering and blending colors to create texture and dimension, and explore how color and shading can bring a planet and its rings to life against a deep space background
Coat of Arms Collage Multicultural Lesson
Students will learn about the history and cultural significance of coats of arms and create their own personal shield using collage. They will practice cutting and arranging paper symbols that represent their identity, heritage, and values, divided into sections within a shield design

Capillary Action STEAM Lesson
Students will explore the science of capillary action and how it relates to art by using liquid ink or paint that flows and spreads across a wet surface. They will observe how color moves and blends organically, creating expressive abstract lines and shapes on a watercolor background
Elements of Art Zine Lesson
Students will learn about the seven elements of art — line, shape, color, value, form, space, and texture — by creating a folded zine. Each section of the zine features drawings, color work, and collage that visually demonstrate and define each element

Seasons Interdisciplinary Lesson
Students will learn to illustrate the four seasons — Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter — by drawing and coloring a tree in each season using colored pencils. They will explore how color, detail, and seasonal changes in nature connect art with science and the world around them.
Sunset Silhouette Animal Lesson
Students will learn to create a sunset silhouette scene using paint. They will practice blending warm colors — red, orange, and yellow — to paint a glowing sky, then cut or paint a bold animal silhouette in the foreground to create a striking contrast between light and dark.
Thematic Pre-Raphaelite Art Lessons
Thematic Pre-Raphaelite Botanical Lesson
Students will learn to draw a detailed botanical subject — a rose with stem, leaves, and bud — using pencil. They will practice observational drawing, organic line work, and shading techniques to create depth, value, and form inspired by the detailed natural style of the Pre-Raphaelite movement

Thematic Pre-Raphaelite Portrait Drawing Lesson
Students will learn to draw a portrait in profile using pencil, inspired by the Pre-Raphaelite style. They will practice capturing facial features, flowing hair, and decorative details while using shading and value to create dimension and a sense of realism.

Thematic Pre-Raphaelite Narrative Painting Lesson
Students will learn to create a narrative painting using acrylic, inspired by the Pre-Raphaelite style. They will practice painting a figure within a detailed landscape setting, blending warm and cool colors, and using light, shadow, and rich color to tell a story through their artwork.

Thematic Pre-Raphaelite Mix Media Landscape Lesson
Students will learn to create a detailed landscape scene using watercolor and charcoal, inspired by the Pre-Raphaelite style. They will practice building a composition with architectural elements, flowing water, and nature, exploring perspective, atmospheric color, and how to blend charcoal drawing with watercolor painting techniques together.
Thematic Pre-Raphaelite Portrait Painting Lesson
Students will learn to paint a portrait using acrylic paint, inspired by the Pre-Raphaelite style. They will practice mixing skin tones, painting flowing hair, and rendering fabric and floral details while using color, light, and shadow to bring the figure to life on canvas
